Dedicate an area for your office,
an entire room is best if this is possible.
In this dedicated area, you'll need to have your desk with your
office phone.
You should have a good desk chair, and a file
cabinet,
probably a book shelf or book case. Your computer and computer
table
should be here, and if you have a fax or any other office
equipment,
place them here also.
Other assorted necessities may be audio and
video equipment,
waste baskets, a shredder, other chairs for visitors,
and a scanner for your computer that can also serve as a copier.
Paperwork
Think of how to organize your files. Think of
your businesses needs
and what headings would be logical. You can file by categories
according to how often you use them. Or an alphabetical system is
good.
But whatever filing system you decide on, set
it up right away
so you can find what you need when you need it.
Think of the most logical way you would be looking for an item,
to determine how to name your folders. The same applies for
computer folders.
Use hanging file folders to help catagorize,
and manilla file folders for the sub files.
As a pre-sort, get stackable trays labeled:
"To Do", "To Pay", "To Read",
"To File", and any other
designation that suits your business.
You should have a "tickler file",
that prompts you to contact
your prospects. There are excellent software programs available
to track and manage your contacts with your computer.
Try to spend the last part of your day, getting
all papers in their proper places,
so that your desk doesn't clutter - and you will have a
fresh start
on what to do the next day. Write a to-do list for your next day
to include working on the items in your pre-sort trays,
to get them all acted upon asap.
An additional way to organize paperwork is to
get 3-ring binders.
Some subject matter that you refer to often is best kept there.
A section in a notebook for recording your ideas as you get them
will be a great help to your business.
